November Events & Dev. Goals; October Reflections

Michael Schwartz November 5, 2012

We wanted to start a monthly newsletter to keep anyone interested in new and existing identity standards, such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and SCIM, more informed with our progress developing open source identity software using these standards and others.

For a more complete picture of Gluu and our mission, check out our story.

November Events:

East Austin Studio Tour (EAST)November 10-11, 17-18 — Our CEO Mike Schwartz has donated his east Austin backyard to artists from all over Austin to showcase their work in EAST. If you’re in town either weekend and want to take part in the festivities, check the tour schedule and find us at 2nd & Waller.

Cloud Identity Summit: Local Edition – DallasNovember 14  — Capitalizing on the success of the Cloud Identity Summit, Ping Identity has launched a tour of smaller local versions for people from the identity community to network, exchange ideas, and learn about exciting developments in Identity. Tickets are still available!

Gluu EDU Webinar: November 16 from 2:00-3:00pm EST — Managing an IdP service can be complicated. We know. That’s why we created the Gluu EDU Server. Spend an hour with Gluu’s CEO Mike Schwartz on November 16, from 2:00-3:00pm EST, as he demo’s the Gluu EDU Server. Learn how more than 10 universities are using Gluu EDU to normalize their Shibboleth IdP deployment and to provide an additional layer of support for increasingly complex SAML federation requirements.

November Developmental Goals:

1) Multi-Party federations for our OpenID Connect platform, OX. Details for our proposed plan can be found on the OpenID Wiki.

2) Open Source the GluuTrust graphical user interface (GUI)

October Reflections:

October was a busy month for Gluu. To start, our CEO & Founder Mike Schwartz hosted a session on The Future of Cloud Identity at RSA Europe in London. It was his first trip to the UK and he had a great time (although he thought the beer selection would be better)…

Aside, RSA Europe offered a good chance to speak about the work we’ve been doing here at Gluu, as well as the work taking place within the standards community around OAuth2 profiles: OpenID Connect and UMA.

Check out slides from Mike’s presentation at RSA Europe.

Later in the month, Gluu participated in the 15th semi-annual Internet Identity Workshop (IIW) in Mountain View, CA, and also sponsored AppSec USA here in Austin, TX. Both were rewarding, and we especially enjoyed hosting an “Identity After Party” after the AppSec conference on Thursday the 25th.

Conferences like AppSec and IIW are great for getting people from the identity and security industries together to discuss and collaborate on organizational infrastructure requirements. We met a number of great engineers, visionaries, and executives, and especially enjoyed catching up with the people from Austin based digital security solutions provider, Gemalto.

In October we also saw a spike in interest in our higher education SSO platform, Gluu EDU. We suspect more universities are starting to feel the pain of managing their IdP service internally, and are realizing the value of Gluu’s managed Shibboleth platform. It’s no surprise to us, though. Gluu EDU runs the same software as our enterprise product, but is 87% cheaper and comes with better support.

And on that note, we close the door on October 2012, and strive to meet our developmental and business goals for November. Stay Tuned! :)
